Nerath Empire – The Keep on the Shadowfell

Nearly two hundred years ago, a cult of the demon prince Orcus purposely created a gap or twist within the fabric of the barrier between worlds… connecting one of Orcus’s unholy Shadowfell sites to the material plane. Skeletons, zombies, and fouler creatures of death flooded through the rift and entered the light of Day… The empire of Nerath dispatched legionnaires to eliminate the threat… The empire’s soldiers destroyed the undead, sealed the opening, and built a Keep to watch over this location and contain the threat. This is the site known as The Keep on the Shadowfell…

The Legend of the Keep on the Shadowfell

[History] The people of Winterhaven avoid Shadowfell Keep. Some leave it alone because of the simple fact that every ancient ruin has a disturbing feeling about them, a feeling composed of lingering memories and unknown mysteries. Some say the place is haunted. Others fear the rumors of goblinods using the place as a lair.

Whatever the reason behind its solitude, one fact is clear. Within two short decads after the collapse of the Nareth Empire, Shadowfell Keep was abandoned and left to fall apart and decay. It was on a grisly night about eighty years ago that the commander of the keep’s garrison, Sir Keegan, put into motion the events that would lead to the keep’s downfall.

Perhaps the Shadow Rift’s malign influence is too strong to resist. Maybe Sir Keegan was an insane monster driven by demons we may never fully understand. Whatever the case, at the stroke of midnight on that fateful day, Sir Keegan began to systematically slaughter every resident of the keep. His own wife and children were the first to fall to his blade, then his trusted advisors, and finally many of the soldiers under his command. Sir Keegan was too skilled for any one soldier to defeat, yet eventually the garrison managed to respond with an organized defense. Although many brave soldiers lost their lives, they managed to drive the mad knight into the passages beneath the keep and, finally, to dispatch him.

The keep became notorious for a time. As one of the last bastions of the fallen empire, there was no one to order it back into service. So, it was abandoned, fear for a time, and eventually, more or less forgotten. An earthquake a few years later collapsed the upper towers and walls, and turned the place into a ruin of tumbled stone.

Rumors persist of great treasures buried beneath the keep, yet few have dared explore the passages over the years. Sir Keegan’s ghost is said to roam the corridors beneath the ruins, wailing in grief over the tragedy of his life. The people of Winterhaven avoid the place, and the mere mention of Shadowfell Keep is considered bad luck by many of the farmers and villagers.

400 A.H.
Destruction of the Keep

Having departed the village of Winterhaven, the PCs traveled to the Keep on the Shadowfell where they defeated a grave threat to the region, and prevented the devious plans of the dark priest Kalarel from being fulfilled. Soon after their escape, the PCs watched as the Keep crumbled into total ruin.

Personal History: Nariko

c. 384 A.H.
Born name unknown, human female. Adopted shortly thereafter as Nariko Rayne.

384 – 396 A.H.
Raised by the Rayne family in a fine inn at a quiet port city. Adoptive mother died soon after Nariko’s inclusion into the family, after which Nariko was raised mainly by her adoptive father and her older brother, Erick.

396 – 400 A.H.
Around age 12, Nariko’s sorceress powers began to manifest. After a period of self-instruction, she turned to the wizard Telvann, a long-term tenant of the family inn, for an informal apprenticeship which would last several years.

400 A.H.
Having learned of the meaning of the Dragonmark tattoo on her back, which she had had since birth (apparently..) an angry Nariko ran away from home, determined to discover the truth behind her own personal origin-story.

After a month or so of wandering, she met the dragonborn fighter Tovar, whom she convinced to team up with her to complete several jobs and adventures (Notably the epic yarn “Raiders of the Lost Fedora”). Later on in that same year, she and Tovar met the tiefling scholar Larissa and adventured with her during the events of “Keep on the Shadowfell”.

Born Larissa Moonshadow, tiefling female.

379 – 400 A.H.
Early life. Your early life thus far is largely secret, and thus not shared with your companions. You are well-learned in matters magical and historical, and your natural glibness and talent as a Bard has trained your tounge to be both golden and razor-sharp, as well as gifted you a keen ear for the local gossip. You have some small talent in magic, and have mastered the use of two Rituals. You are a worshipper of Corellon. You are fluent in Common and Elven.

400 A.H.
Having been recently contacted by an old acquaintance of yours—an earnest young priestess of the Great Church named Marla—you were sent to Winterhaven in order to investigate rumors of a dangerous cult headed by a twisted priest named Kalarel.

Upon arriving in Winterhaven, you chose the local inn (Wrafton’s) as an ideal place to begin your investigation. Soon after settling in, you were suprisingly pleased to make the acquaintance of a somewhat strange-looking halfling called Splug, who regaled you with interesting stories as your dining companion. Shortly thereafter, you were accosted by a large dragon-man warrior (Tovar) and a hyperactive human teen (Nariko), who swept you away in their recent adventure, eventually freeing the town of an imminent undead menace, and journeying onwards to defeat Kalarel and his evil plans.

400 A.H.

History: The Age of Heroes

The Age of Heroes (0 – 400 A.H.)

Still reeling from the devestations of the last era, the kingdoms of man have rapidly risen and fallen again in the past few centuries. The dwarven empire is making a slow recovery; clans of dragonborn and tieflings wander the earth, and the goblinoids are again reduced to a savage existence. The elvish kingdoms have become reclusive and well-guarded; Fayre is again in alignment with the mortal plane, allowing the Eladrin (and the stranger creatures of the fay) to once again roam the wild places. Although much time has passed already by mortal reckoning, it is still hard to tell what events this new era will bring.

History: The Age of Fables

The Age of Fables (-2250 A.F. 1200 A.F)

From deep in their mountain fastness, the Dwarves emerged to craft an empire. Filled with an almost religious zeal—the source of which is unknown to outsiders—their empire spread far and wide, bringing the light of civilization to the darkened corners of the land. Colonies grew into cities, which grew into kingdoms, which served to spread the might of the great emperor-kings of Mountainhome. Many wars were fought, and alliances forged, with the human, elven, and dragonborn empires. Peace ruled the land.

It was not to last, however. The Age of Fables was to end in the Time of Death, as demonic armies swept the land, bringing destruction and plague. Kingdom after kingdom fell before the terrible might of the goblinoid armies. The Goblin Empire was crafted amoung the ruins of the dwarvish one, a kingdom based on slavery and devotion to darkness. Only the might of the stalwart Dragonborn Empire blocked their total ascension to power, and the apocolyptic war that ensued would bring both of these mighty powers to ruin, never to rise again; except, perhaps, as scattered clans.

The Age of Myths

In the Age of Myths, the gods walked the earth. Mortals vied for their favor, and were gifted with artifacts of untold power. The first Elven War was waged and won; and the elves left their homeland of Fayre in order to dwell in the world as mortals. Creatures of monstrous might and exceeding strangeness were defeated and destroyed by the first chosen heroes, and their like has not been seen in this world before or since.
